Current Safety Status around Mount Usu

 

Level Status Explanation
  Level 3 Restriced Mountain Access Access around the area of Mount Usu is restricted
  Level 2 Restricted Volcano Access The walking and hiking paths of the mountain are partly restricted
Level 1 Normal Normal use of walking and hiking paths allowed

Note:

  1. This safety information is made available for persons considering or planning hiking tours in the area. For volcano eruption warnings, evacuation instructions etc. please refer to disaster prevention information from municipalities, fire departments, Japan Meteorological Agency etc.
  2. Even on a "Normal" safety status level, some parts of the volcano crater are restricted from access

 

Hazard Map

This Mount Usu Volcanic Hazard Map (Hazard Map, published 2002) includes scientific geological data about past eruptions as well as a predicted estimation of future eruptions based on past disaster records. It is is also distributed among regional citizens, lodging establishments etc.

In the eruption of Mount Usu in the year 2000, the use of the Hazard Map helped to evacuate inhabitants and tourists of the area quickly prevented any personal damage.

Emergency Response Information

For Your Safety, obey the following notice:

  •    When evacuation is necessary to prevent volcanic disaster, there will be an alarm siren.
  •    Do Not Panic!! Please follow the instructions of your hotel staff and local authorities.
  •    In the case of evacuation please take care of your family and friends.
  •    Follow the evacuation route shown on maps.
